about

SELECTED SONGS: PALACE MUSIC

A collection of rare, unreleased, uncollected tracks from Will Oldham as Palace Music, from 1992-1998.

Will Oldham's wide-ranging influence can be felt in nearly everything in the Selected Songs series so far, so it feels a bit surreal to summarize this compilation in a handful of words.

Palace (Music, Brothers, Songs) was an incredibly prolific mid '90s project: releasing 4 LPs, an EP, a thick stack of 7'' singles, and a historically significant 'Lost Blues' compilation (two, really).

In the liner notes to this cassette, Will himself refers to thinking about the Palace years as an apprenticeship for the work he would do as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. This is quite apt, and it is a joy to revisit this material through that lens. Lucky for us, his fervor for creation did not wane, and quality material has just kept coming.

I remember finding a well-worn original copy of 'Days In The Wake' on tape before tapes "came back," and being struck with how fitting the format was for the music. I made this compilation for so many more ears than my own, and still when I finally got to hear these uncollected songs and alternate versions play in sequence from the warmth of my wooden speakers, a circle had been fully drawn. A circle we welcome you into.

Much of the material was sourced from the BPB mixtape series (volumes one through seven), which can and should be found here: bonnieprincebilly.bandcamp.com The rest came from a few far corners, and it all is for you to now enjoy.

Includes extensive liner notes: an essay by series co-curator Andrew Barton on his experience as a listener, interspersed with illuminating liner notes written by Will Oldham himself. The notes read like two sections of the same stream flowing in tandem, sometimes intersecting for a moment to catch the light.

Mastered (meticulously, lovingly) by Fred Thomas.
